Is Botox a Permanent Treatment

According to The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Botox injections in men have seen a 337% increase over the past two decades. Popular amongst men in NYC who are looking to maintain a healthier, more vibrant look, Botox has become the most requested non-surgical solution to reverse the effects of aging. But is Botox a permanent treatment?

Ideal for those who are entering a new stage of life, changing careers, or who want to maximize their youthful appearance—Botox can erase undesirable signs of aging including fine lines and wrinkles. From celebrities to athletes and politicians, men are now more open than ever about wanting to feel good about how they look.

Before embarking on your Botox journey, it’s important to understand how Botox injections for men work, the benefits, long-term effects, and whether or not it’s a permanent treatment.

What is Botox?

Botox is short for Botulinum Toxin Type A. It is administered to the patient in small doses via injection to treat unwanted facial lines and wrinkles. After it’s injected, Botox is able to block certain nerve signals that cause muscles to contract. As a result, the muscles relax and wrinkles are no longer able to occur.

How Does Botox for Men Work?

At a younger age, your skin has more elasticity which helps it snap back into place with the formation of facial expressions. As you grow older, the skin starts to lose its elasticity and that’s how wrinkles, folds, and fine lines are formed. Botox for men works to reverse these effects by relaxing muscles in the face so they do not contract in the same way as they did before. While other injectables push wrinkles out, Botox targets specific areas with small doses in order to stop the muscle from causing fine lines or wrinkles.

Patients are asked to be mindful for the first 2 to 3 hours after receiving Botox, but the overall procedure time is approximately 10 minutes. After a Botox injection, the treatment can begin to work within 24 to 48 hours and after one week, the muscles and nerves stop completely.

What are the Benefits of Botox for Men?

As one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatments, a Botox injection takes just minutes and the results can be seen quickly with no downtime required or visible scarring. The use of Botox has seen advancements over the years and today, it’s a solution for more than fine lines and wrinkles. At Dr. Steinbrech’s NYC practice, Botox has been used safely in the treatment of:

  • Vertical frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Laugh lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Forehead creases
  • Expression improvement
  • Chronic migraine

So, is Botox a Permanent Treatment?

Botox is a temporary treatment that keeps certain facial muscles in a relaxed state. The effects of a Botox treatment can last anywhere from 3 to 12 months, depending on the patient. Certain factors such as large amounts of exercise or overly expressive facial movements can cause Botox to fade faster. In order to keep the desired effect, it is advised to repeat Botox injections every 4 to 6 months. Therefore, Botox is not considered a permanent treatment.

However, if Botox is used regularly over a prolonged period of time, you’ll need less and less maintenance. Depending on the frequency and amount of Botox that is injected, you may not need as much Botox or require injections as often to train the muscles beneath the skin. If you begin your Botox treatment before the lines become too deep, you can prevent getting permanent wrinkles.

Best Non-Invasive Cosmetic Procedures Available For Men

People typically choose a non-invasive procedure when they want to avoid scarring or going under anesthesia. This method leaves the skin intact or unbroken, meaning it does not require an incision or cutting of the skin. Rather than going under anesthesia, your NYC board-certified surgeon will use lasering or syringe techniques to achieve the patient’s goals. Non-invasive procedures are most common for individuals who are aging, and those who have health conditions that can’t succeed in invasive surgery. The best non-invasive cosmetic procedures available for men include:

  1. Facial and Body Fat Injections

Fat injections are performed to fill and shape areas of the face and body for male patients. Sometimes the process will not create a permanent change, as it will require maintenance. The method includes an injection in the donor area, which typically is the gluteal or abdominal region. The infusion will take the fat from that area and transfer it to the face or desired area. Before injection, the fat is placed in a syringe where it will be cleaned and available for the designated area. Dr. Steinbrech of Male Plastic Surgery NYC is a strong advocate for Selective Fat Transfer when performing liposuction procedures. Most notably his personally developed procedure, BodyBanking® which can be combined with an array of other treatments:

The recovery process for this procedure is straightforward. There is little to no downtime, and the patient can continue their daily routines. There might be minor swelling and/or bruising that occurs for about two days after the procedure. A patient can return to have the process again.

  1. Botox

Botox for men consists of injections that cause specific muscles to stop producing wrinkles or frown lines. The goal of this procedure is to create a younger facial appearance. Botox has a plusnot only does it diminish wrinkles and lines, but it also stops them from recurring. Within 24 to 48 hours, the patient will see a difference in facial appearance, and up to one week, the patient will see the full results.

People choose botox because it is painless and does not require recovery time. However, patients are asked to be mindful for the first 2 to 3 hours after receiving Botox. The overall procedure time is at least 10 minutes and can last anywhere from 3 to 12 months. Botox is also known to help people who have:

  • Vertical frown lines
  • Laugh lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead creases
  • Chronic migraines
  • Desire to improve expressions
  1. Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers help diminish facial wrinkles and repair the volume and fullness in the face. This procedure takes up to about 15 minutes with minimal recovery time. Patients will find minor swelling and redness that can last up to three days post-procedure. Two types of fillers for men include:

Restylane was created to help patients who want to enhance their lip shape and facial contours while smoothening the wrinkles. This treatment is most commonly performed between the eyebrows and the bottom of the nose to give the mouth more angle. A synthetic gel is injected into the middle layer of the skin, smoothing out the wrinkles and adds volume. The gel used is a natural substance that is also found throughout the body.

Radiesse is another filler for men performed on the lips, smile lines, depressed scars, and corners of the mouth. The desired area is injected with a biocompatible gel which is made of the same minerals in our bones. This filler targets scarring and creases on the face.

  1. Kybella

Kybella is most common for patients with moderate-to-severe (submental) fat sediments below the chin area. The whole procedure takes about 15 minutes, where the surgeon will use Kybella injections into the unwanted fat. It is the perfect procedure for people who want to get rid of their double chin.

Differences Between Invasive and Non-invasive Surgery

Over the last decade, research points to a healthy increase in both surgical and minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures. Statistics show particularly upward trending numbers in treatments from 2017 to 2018 alone. According to the latest American Society of Plastic Surgeons data, 2018 showed nearly a quarter-million more cosmetic procedures than the previous year.

While reports show equally rising numbers for top non-invasive treatments (fat reduction) and cosmetic surgeries (liposuction), it’s worth mentioning the distinct differences between invasive and non-invasive surgery. Surgical options often yield the most dramatic changes but can come with a moderate period of recovery. Minimally-invasive procedures, while sometimes not measuring up in terms of results, are a great option for those who want little-to-no disruption in their daily routine.
